ISHS Acta Horticulturae 336: II International Symposium on In Vitro Culture and Horticultural Breeding

EFFECTS OF NACL AND CACL2 IN PRUNUS CERASIFERA TISSUE CULTURE

Authors:   M. Lucchesini, C. Vitagliano
Abstract:
The response of in vitro-grown Prunus cerasifera plantlets was assayed when increasing NaCl doses (35, 100, 150, 250 mM) in combination with two CaCl2 concentrations (3, 10 mM) were added to the medium (LS). Negative effects were observed at 150 and 250 mM salt doses in combination with 3 mM CaCl2. Marked improvement was obtained when 10 mM CaCl2 was added to the medium, confirming that Ca++ acts as a cell membrane protector against the adverse effects of Na+. Results also indicated that plantlets were not affected by salinity at 35 mM salt concentration in combination with 3 mM CaCl2. Predominant effects at this dose were probably osmotic, due to greater Na+ availability.
