ISHS Acta Horticulturae 335: International Symposium on Irrigation of Horticultural Crops

OVERHEAD MICROSPRINKLING IRRIGATION FOR COLD PROTECTION OF APPLE AND PEAR TREES

Authors:   F. Solanelles, S. Planas
Abstract:
Different sprinkle low application rates (2–3 mm/h) (SLAR) over apple trees (var. Golden Delicious) and pear trees (var. Conference) are tested under cold conditions. Water is applied using different nozzles in a same microsprinkler equipped with an antimist device. Trials are carried out indoors, using a 80 m2 cold-storage room where a standard frost is simulated. Temperature is automatically controlled and recorded by a computer. The day after every trial, cold damage is checked. According to the results, SLAR may be useful for cold protection of fruit trees in the fruit production area of Lleida, because of smaller pressure requirements and water needs than in traditional sprinkle irrigation.
