LEAF WATER POTENTIAL AND CWSI OF SWEET SORGHUM IN RELATION TO THE AVAILABLE SOIL MOISTURE

Authors:   R. Stricevic, V. Pocuca, R. Cvetkovic, N. Jovanovic
Abstract:
The aim of this work was to find out relationship between available soil moisture and sweet sorghum water status expressed through the leaf water potential and CWSI in semi-humid climatic condition. The trial was carried out on a chernozem soil at "Becej" farm (120 km north from Belgrade), during the summer 1991. This period of investigation included the two stage of sweet sorghum growth: stem elongation and pre-anthesis, when drought period is most likely to occur.

Obtained results show that crop was in well water condition during the observed period. It is confirmed both by soil water and plant water status. Sweet sorghum ecophysiological processes in relation to the water showed the same behavior, regardless of climatic conditions (arid, semi-humid). Relationship between available soil water and leaf water potential gave rather high correlation coefficient what tells the lower the available soil moisture to the plant, the lower the leaf water potential.

From this results one can conclude that plant growth, ecophysiological processes and general plant health can be determined by Plant Stress Monitor and Pressure Chamber, the most suitable instruments for routine measurements in the field.
