ISHS Acta Horticulturae 335: International Symposium on Irrigation of Horticultural Crops

GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF TOMATO CV. MUCHAMIEL UNDER SALINE IRRIGATION

Authors:   J. Navarro-Pedreño, I. Gómez, J. Mataix
Keywords:   Salinity, growth, yield, quality, tomato
Abstract:
Tomato cv. Muchamiel was grown in pots containing calcareous soil under saline irrigation promoted by NaCl in greenhouse conditions. Three treatments were established related to the irrigation, adding NaCl to the current water (SO= 0.5–1.0 mS/cm), S1 (2.5 mS/cm) and S2 (4.5 mS/cm). Plant growth, yield and quality of fruits were analyzed.

Length and fresh weight of stems and branches were affected by salinity, and also fresh weight of leaves; however statistical analysis of the results only showed significant differences on the stems. There was no reduction in total yield, and some effects in fruit quality (diminution of pH and increase of E.C.) were found. Saline irrigation promoted a greater number of fruits with a diminution of size.
