FUNGICIDAL CONTROL OF PHYTOPHTHORA SPECIES ON QUEEN AND CAYENNE PINEAPPLES

Author:   D.B. Dalldorf
Keywords:   phosphorus acid, fosetyl-Al, metalaxyl, fungicides
Abstract:
Heart and Root Rot caused by Phytophthora spp. has caused serious damage to pineapple plantations in the Eastern Cape since the 1960's. Initially ridging and planting down the slope were the only methods for controlling the problem. This caused excessive erosion. Numerous Phytophthora control experiments have been carried out over the past decade using the fungicides metalaxyl, fosetyl-Al and phosphorous acid. In a Queen cv trial the mean tonnage of fruit harvested ha-1 in the control was only 1.7 in comparison to 19.4 where fosetyl-Al was used. In a Cayenne cv trial the plant crop yield in the control treatment was 2.29 t ha-1 while in effective metalaxyl and or fosetyl-Al treatments it was in excess of 60 t ha-1.
