| Abstract:
The feasibility of using cover crops (oat, rhodesgrass, soybean, and marigold) during the pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) inter-cycle periods was investigated as a means of reducing population densities of Rotylenchulus reniformis, Helicotylenchus dihystera, and Paratylenchus spp. Bare fallow and fallow mulched with pineapple residue were used as. controls. Densities of R. reniformis and Paratylenchus spp., but not H. dihystera declined in all treatments over a 6-month period. The plants, especially marigold, effected greater decreases in numbers of R. reniformis and Paratylenchus spp. than treatments without crop plants. H. dihystera population densities also declined in plots planted with marigold, rhodesgrass, or in plots left fallow with or without mulches, but they increased 1.8 and 9.0 fold in soybean and oat plots, respectively. The soil samples were assayed for biological antagonistic activity against R. reniformis, but little immediate or residual activity was found. | |
