Abstract:
Wild sugarcane (Saccharum spontaneum L.) is a important perennial weed in the high rainfall pineapple fields of Del Monte Philippines, Inc. (DMPI). It is a tall grass mainly propagated asexually from stout underground stems. Paraquat dichloride at 1.12 kg ai ha-1 and glufosinate-NH4 at 3.36 kg ai ha-1 provided only "top-kill" of the weed. Regrowth started in less than a month. Glyphosate at 4.48 kg ai ha-1 provided 90% control but it can be used in non-crop areas only and during fallow because of its phytotoxicity to pineapple. Fluazifop-butyl applied twice at 3-month intervals at 168 g ai ha-1/application was effective against wild sugarcane at the rapid tillering stage. It was not phytotoxic to pineapple and no herbicide residues were detected in the fruit when the last application was done 300 days before harvest. Fenoxaprop-ethyl applied at 84 g ai ha-1 effectively controlled young wild sugarcane in the greenhouse. This herbicide is still under evaluation in the field.
