ISHS Acta Horticulturae 334: I International Pineapple Symposium

STUDIES ON BLACK HEART DISORDER IN PINEAPPLE VARIETIES GROWN IN SRI LANKA

Authors:   R.S. Wilson Wijeratnam, M. Abeyesakere, P. Surjani
Abstract:
Susceptibility of Sri Lankan-grown Mauritius (Queen Group) and Kew (Smooth Cayenne Group) pineapples to black heart was tested in this study. Refrigerated storage trials were conducted over the 1991 and 1992 production seasons. Fruits of both varieties were subjected to treatments including application of pineapple wax and modified atmosphere storage obtained by storing fruits in polyethylene bags. Visual assessment of the disorder was confirmed by spectrophotometric method. Kew pineapples were less susceptible to the disorder than Mauritius. Wax treatment reduced the incidence of the disorder and enhanced flavour, particularly for Mauritius fruits. The MA storage procedure did not improve fruit quality.
