Abstract:
Optimising eating quality in Queensland fresh pineapple is important because the variability is high.
The fruit are produced throughout year and can come from production areas up to 1500 km apart with widely different production parameters.
Major factors affecting the eating quality of freshmarket Smooth Cayenne pineapple are season at harvest, production area, and fruit "maturity". In Queensland, factors that affect the commercial harvest maturity include the non-climacteric physiology, blackheart development, and the variability of consumers preferences.
A model for understanding the development and variation of eating quality in pineapple is presented and discussed.
The model predicts that, at any one season, a low ratio of fruit-mass to leaf-area results in fruit with the best eating quality.
