Abstract:
The response of Gandul, a canning pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) variety, to varying amounts of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P2O5), and potassium (K2O) was studied on a deep peat soil in Johore, Malaysia.
Amounts in kg ha-1 were N as ammonium sulphate, 0, 118, 235 and 353; P2O5 as Christmas Island rock phosphate, 0, 4, 8 and 12; and K2O as muriate of potash, 0, 122.5, 245.0 and 367.5. Plant height, dry weight of D-leaf, number of suckers plant-1, fruit weight, fruit diameter, and core diameter all increased significantly with increasing N. Fruit sugar and acid contents decreased significantly with increasing N. No significant response to P was obtained for any of the parameters studied.
Plant height, number of ground suckers plant-1, fruit weight, fruit diameter, core diameter and fruit acidity all increased and fruit percent total soluble solids (TSS%) decreased significantly with increasing K. There was no significant effect of K on the number of aerial suckers produced.
There were no statistically significant interactions for any of the parameters evaluated.
