GENETIC VARIABILITY IN THE GENUS ANANAS

Authors:   M.-F. Duval, G. Coppens D'Eeckenbrugge
Abstract:
In order to study genetic variability in the genus Ananas, 27 quantitative and 18 qualitative variables were collected on 89 clones of the main cultivated groups and the wild species A. ananassoides, A. bracteatus and A. lucidus. The results show a first partition between A. comosus and other species, except for two A. ananassoides clones. Within A. comosus, the Cayenne, Queen and Pernambuco groups appear clearly distinct and homogenous. In the Mordilona group, we found two distinct subgroups and a few isolated clones, possibly originating from sexual recombination. The Spanish group is composed of two clusters. One is relatively homogenous and includes red types with cylindrical fruits and their mutants without anthocyanin. The other cluster includes red types with globular fruits and a number of unclassified clones.
