ISHS Acta Horticulturae 334: I International Pineapple Symposium

A COMPUTER-BASED FARM-MANAGEMENT PACKAGE FOR PINEAPPLE FARMS

Author:   E.R. Sinclair
Abstract:
Computer packages will improve the level of pineapple farm management in an increasingly competitive environment. A package for farm use is being developed in Australia. It will consist of (1) Farm recording - records of field plantings and yields, fertiliser and chemical use (2) Recall of records - to allow comparison of yields with the use of inputs, and (3) Predictive capacity to alert the user to forward requirements for nutrition and fertiliser needs and events such as induction and harvesting, as well as providing information on potential cropping changes. The farm recording and recall modules (together called PINEREC) are the most advanced to date. During development of the package it is essential to work closely with interested growers to maximise their involvement and the utility of the program although this can markedly slow development because of the need to make the package diverse enough to meet the needs of most farmers. There has been little development yet of the predictive pineapple growth model (PINEGRO) which will be driven from the information recorded in PINEREC.
