| Abstract:
A survey was conducted to determine the yield profile of pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) cv. Gandul grown at a high plant population density (density) on deep virgin peat soil in Malaysia, from December 1990 to February 1991. Seven 0.4 ha. census areas having a density of 55 000 plants ha-1 were sampled for their yield profile. Fruits were harvested at the dried bract stage, 154 days after flower induction. Individual weights of 2500 marketable and 100 non-marketable fruit were recorded. In these plantings, 84.7% of the fruit was estimated to be marketable and the average fruit weighed 1.3 kg. The average fruit weight distribution was 15.5% <0.9 kg; 50.8% 0.9–1.3 kg; 28.3% 1.4–1.8 kg; 5.5% 1.9–2.3 kg; and 0.2% >2.4 kg. The average number of non-marketable fruit per 0.4 ha plot was 2697 and the average nonmarketable fruit weighed 0.49 kg. The yield profile was observed to be affected by the use of nonuniform planting material and uneven fertilizer distribution due to the presence of uncollected stumps. | |
