ISHS Acta Horticulturae 333: WOCMAP I - Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Conference: part 1 of 4

BOTANICAL AND ECOLOGICAL STUDY OF SPECIES OF THE GENUS FERULA (MEDICINAL PLANTS) IN MAZANDARAN PROVINCE

Authors:   N. Safaian, M. Shokri
Abstract:
Genus of Ferula belongs to tribe Peucedaneae and subfamily of Apioideae and Umbelliferae family.

About 30 Ferula species are distributed in different regions of Iran (Rechinger 1987).

Performed researchers in Mazandaran province show that the following species are utilized in the province.

Ferula gumosa

Ferula karakalensis

Ferula persica

Ferula orientalis

Ferula ovina

Ferula azovitsiana

Considering the importance of separation of the above-mentioned species from the stand point of botanical characteristics, their determination key was prepared.

Ecological studies show that the best habitats of the above-mentioned plants are the shaded north-facing slopes in altitude of 2000–4000 m above sea level that have deep calcareous and well-drained soil.

The survey shows that ecological parameters (rainfall, fog and altitude) affect the quality of produced resins.

The best utilization time was July and August.
