ISHS Acta Horticulturae 333: WOCMAP I - Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Conference: part 1 of 4

CONTAMINATION OF MEDICINAL PLANTS WITH RESIDUES OF PESTICIDES, MICROORGANISMS, AFLATOXINES AND HEAVY METALS

Authors:   T. A. Grün, U. Köhler, A. Nagell
Abstract:
For more than ten years, ADDIPHARMA, a specialised laboratory for analysis of phytopharmaceuticals, examines residues of pesticides, microorganisms and aflatoxines in medicinal plants.

On some selected drugs it is shown, how it has been possible to reduce the contamination with pesticides by influence on the importers in the countries of origin. Up to now, results of bacteriological examinations were inaccurate because of the use of e.g. ethylene oxide for germ-reduction. The statistics presented base on examinations which were carried out on non-germreduced material.

The testing of certain plant material on aflatoxines obtains increasing importance because of the extreme toxicity of these chemical substances. The actual disposition of our analytics is presented.

Because of the actual discussion about limits for heavy metals in medicinal plants it is important to examine residues of lead, cadmium and mercury.

A review about the state of contamination of some selected plants is shown.
