CLINICAL EVALUATION OF THE POTENTIALS OF RAUVOLFIA VOMITORIA BASED EXTRACT IN THE TREATMENT OF HAEMORRHOIDS AND ANAL PROLAPSE IN NIGERIA

Author:   E.O. Olapade
Abstract:
Five types of herbal therapeutics used by a patient who had suffered haemorrhoids and frequent anal prolapse for seventeen years were screened. Rauvolfia vomitoria based extract was identified as most potent in effecting relief and inducing anal retraction. Eighty-eight patients aged 2 – 82 years old, were treated with Rauvolfia vomitoria Extract. They showed positive responses without significant side effects between 1987 and 1991. The administered dosages varied from 5 mls to between 10–20 mls thrice daily in children and adults respectively while duration was generally for 14 days, except in a 5 year old male and an 82 year old male whose prolapse was more or less permanent for 3 years and another 42 year old female whose prolapse had occured during child birth about 8 years back, all required longer durations. The significance of this observation is discussed in terms of its effectiveness as an alternative to haemorrhoidectomy.
