ZYGOPHYLLUM GESLINI COSS.: CHEMICAL INVESTIGATION HYPOGLYCEMIC ACTIVITY

Authors:   D. Smati, V. Hammiche, H. Nehari, B. Alamir, R. Merad
Abstract:
Zygophyllum geslini Coss., vernacular name: "AGGAIA", is an endemic species of algerian central Sahara, used in folk medicine as an aid in the management of diabetes.

The quantitative tests for sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium, showed that content was roughly equal in leaf and stem.

The preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, tanins and alkaloids.

To investigate a possible hypoglycemic effect, aqueous extracts were administered orally to hyperglycemic rat and alloxan diabetic rat.
