Abstract:
Iberogast is a fixed medicinal plant combination used in FRG for over twenty years as a remedy of choice in the treatment of tonic and motility dysfunctions in association with dyspeptic diseases and irritable colon.
The phytopharmacon, as well as its components, Iberis amara fresh plant extract (1) and 8 other herbal extracts (2) were assayed on the acetylcholine induced contraction of the guinea pig ileum to find pharmacological evidences of its widely acclaimed therapeutic usefulness.
The fresh plant extract of Iberis amara (1) increased the basal resting tone and contraction of atonic and slightly contracted gut segments.
The herbal extracts (2) inhibited the contractile action of acetylcholine on the guinea pig ileum.
The phytopharmacon Iberogast displayed a dual action, increased tone and contraction of atonic and hypotonic ileum and relaxed the strongly contracted.
The presented pharmacological evidences of dual action explain, at least in part the therapeutic usefulness of Iberogast in relieving both spastic and hypotonic dysmotility symptoms of dyspeptic diseases and irritable bowel syndromes alike.
