THE EFFECT OF SOME PLANT EXTRACTS ON BODY WEIGHT AND ON SOME BIOCHEMICAL ACTIVITIES IN RATS. |

| Abstract:
Rats were fed for 6 weeks with 2% (w/v) water extracts of the following plants: Atriplex halimus, Achillea fragrantissima, Cleome droserifolia and Zygophyllum spp. Atriplex extracts increased and Cleome and Zygophyllum extracts diminished the rate of body weight gain and the adipose weight in relatively mature rats, with no significant effects on young rats. Atriplex and Achillea extracts abolished the activities of glucose phosphorylation, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphate gluconate dehydrogenase in the intestinal mucosa-epithelial tissue (IMET) and liver, but increased significantly their activities in adipose tissue, most markedly in mature rats. Cleome and Zygophyllum extracts have an overall abolishing effect on all enzymes regardless of the age of the rats. The activities of the extracts may be attributed to the accumulation of oxidizing or reducing compounds in the foliage of the examined plants. | |
