IMMUNOSUPPRESSIVE AND PHARMACOLOGICALLY ACTIVE COMPOUNDS FROM POLYPODIUM LEUCOTOMOS

Authors:   M.D. Fernández, A. Brieva, P. Prieto, E. Cabrero, A. Guerrero, J.P. Pivel
Abstract:
Immunosuppressive agents used so far have drawbacks relating either to direct toxicity or to failure to provide balanced immunosuppression.

Our purpose is to obtain immunosuppressive agents without side effects from natural products. To reach these objectives we have worked in an ethnopharmacological approach. After a bibliographic search, we have selected the class of ferns as natural source, and between the ferns the family of Polypodiaceae. After botanical identification we have obtained different extracts of the different parts of these plants. To measure their potential immunosuppressive activity we have chosen the mice splenocyte proliferation assay in response to Concanavalin A (Con A), a T cell mitogen. As a confirmatory bioassay we study the effect of our product on Interleukin-2 (IL-2) production. As other bioassay of inhibition of T cell function we study their effect on the "homing" stimulated by a specific stimulus using the diphenylhydantoin induced popliteal lymph-node enlargement.
