VEGETABLES TO BE USED AS MEDICINAL PLANTS? |

| Abstract:
The same compounds as are present in medicinal plants may equally be found in vegetables. Some of our vegetables had originally been used as medicinal plants, the boundaries between medicinal and vegetable plants are fluent. Breeding measures to establish resistance properties into new cultivars have to attend to such medicinally effective (e.g. semi-essential) substances. Parts of vegetables may be used to produce drugs, or may be effective via dietetic food. - Anticarcinogenic substances as proved in some vegetable species may also get more and more importance. Some compounds of Allium species, of Brassicaceae, of Umbelliferae, of Compositae and of some edible mushrooms will be introduced to force interdisciplinary work (including clinical investigations). There is no specific institute for such work but a great many of opportunities for joint working groups and multidisciplinary exchange of information. Plant breeders and plant growers require more information on pharmacologically valuable compounds to be saved in vegetables. | |
