GROWTH AND NUTRIENT UPTAKE OF ORIGANUM VULGARE SSP. HIRTUM IN SOLUTION CULTURE.

Authors:   C.D. Economakis, C.E. Fournaraki
Keywords:   oregano, solution culture, nutrient uptake, growth yield
Abstract:
Single plant rooted cuttings of Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum (Link) letswaart were grown in solution water culture in an unheated greenhouse over a period of 120 days (March to July 1991). Nutrient (N, P, K) and water uptake, as well as shoot growth and essential oil yield during the various stages of plant development (before flowering - flowering - seed formation), were studied. The highest water and nutrient uptake, for all three nutrients (N,P,K) was observed during seed formation period and the lowest during the flowering. Leaves and inflorescences (commercial dry matter), increased from the first to the last stage of development, while a significant decrease in essential oil (%) was found at the seed formation stage.
