DETERMINATION OF FLORAL STAGES AND PACKAGING METHODS FOR PROLONGED STORAGE OF JASMINUM MULTIFLORUM

Authors:   T.L. Abdullah, S.H. Ahmad, N.A. Rejab
Abstract:
A study on the stages of flower development of Jasminum multiflorum was carried out to determine the optimum picking time and packaging methods for prolonged storage. Flower buds at different developmental stages were harvested and the bud diameter, weight and length were measured. Color change and ethylene production rates were monitored. Flower buds were packed in PE bags with and without air and stored at 4°C, 10°C and 25±5°C. Bud opening, shelf life and quality grades were evaluated. Five floral stages were identified with stage 1 representing very tight buds through stage 5 which represents fully opened buds. Floral stages 2 and 3 were harvested at 32 and 35 days, respectively, after flower initiation. Ethylene production rates were highest at floral stage 3 and declined as the buds opened fully. At 10°C, buds of floral stage 3 in polyethylene bags containing air could be stored for 4 days. The buds opened naturally at ambient temperature seven to nine hours after removal from storage. The most suitable time for picking was at stage 3 and packaging in PE bags containing air with cool storage can prolong the shelf life of jasmine buds.
