Abstract:
Melia azedarach (Meliaceae family), a native of Asiatic Middle East, is now widely distributed in Asia, Africa, South America and in the Mediterranean basin.
This species is used as an ornamental and in tropical countries also for medicinal and pest control purposes.
Melia seed extracts were evaluated to determine their efficacy agains insects specifically in the control of leaf hoppers (Empoasca sp., Eupterix sp.).
In 1991, following an application of Melia seed extract (120 ml of extract in 100 1 of water) on sage, the leaf hoppers population decreased 40 % compared to the control.
The trials were continued in 1992 with different increasing amount of Melila seed extract (0.2 % and 0.4 %) and with a decreasing of the population of about 50 %.
