RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION OF DRUGS STARTING FROM TRADITIONAL MEDICINE AND MEDICINAL PLANTS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: EXAMPLE OF RWANDA

Author:   L. Puyvelde
Abstract:
In Rwanda, multidisciplinary research on native medicine and medicinal plants started at the Faculty of Medicine (National University of Rwanda) at the end of 1971, which led to the creation of a research center in 1980: CURPHAMETRA (Centre de Recherche sur la Pharmacopée et la Médecine Traditionnelle). Presently, CURPHAMETRA disposes of a dispensary of traditional medicine, an interdisciplinary research programme and a small processing plant for the production of drugs derived from medicinal plants. We first started production of plant-derived drugs based on "official medicinal plants", i.e. medicinal plants already described in different Pharmacopeias. With the extracts of these plants (tinctures, liquid extracts, essential oils,…) several pharmaceuticals (syrups, solutions, ointments…) are produced and commercialized in the country. In the meantime several new drugs, the result of our research on the native medicine and medicinal plants, has been developed. These include and anti-scabies solution and ointment, an anti-mycotic ointment, a natural pesticide, an anti-mosquitos cream and candle.
