METHODS OF CONTEMPORARY LARGE SCALE CULTIVATION OF MEDICINAL AND AROMATIC PLANTS

Abstract:
The task of the growers of medicinal and aromatic plants is to meet the increasing demand of high quality drugs using low-input cultivation methods and environment-saving practices. They are forced to minimize production costs in view of the hard international competition. Large scale cultivation enables the farmer to produce large homogeneous charges with low costs. The paper gives a survey of large scale production methods in eastern Germany considering the principles of integrated plant production. The following topics are discussed: varieties, crop rotation, fertilizer management, sprinkler irrigation, weed control, plant protection, mechanization of the harvest, drying installations, farm management, marketing, guidelines for good agricultural practice as quality insurance system of the agricultural part of the production of medicinal and aromatic plants.
