Abstract:
Recommendations -
- For traditional medicinal plants, suitable agroforestry systems need to be developed on a regional or even countrywise basis.
- It is agreed that the domestication of traditional herbs now collected from the wild is imperative.
Stringent federal laws and rules need to be established or enforced to save these plants from extinction.
To protect the environment and for afforestation purpose, domestication of traditional tree species must be initiated.
- It is agreed that quality of a medicinal or aromatic cultivar is due to its genetic base.
For genetic stability, its resources should be explored, characterized, and germplasm pools should be established; preferably in the state of nature - in situ.
- It is agreed that the introduction of medicinally important species from the forest to domestic areas and the introduction of an exotic species from one country to another should be given top priority.
