CONSERVATION OF MEDICINAL PLANTS IN THE TROPICS - A GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY

Author:   I. Hedberg
Abstract:
Despite the fact that by far the largest number of medicinal plants are found in the tropics the importance of such areas as a source of compounds for medicinal use is seldom acknowledged by the scientific community. Neither is due attention paid to the role of medicinal plants in tropical countries and the threat to many of the species. The present paper deals with some of the aspects concerning medicinal plants in the tropics, e.g. their implications for health care and economy in the countries concerned, and the need for improved documentation and conservation in view of their local, regional and global importance. In this context it is imperative that technically advanced countries allot resources for tropical developing countries to acquire relevant techniques in various respects, e.g. for documentation of local knowledge and better utilization of the wealth of biochemical diversity available.
