BRAZILIAN MEDICINAL PLANTS GENE BANK

Abstract:
The National Genetic Resources and Biotechnology Research Center (CENARGEN/EMBRAPA), a government organization, linked to the Ministry of Agriculture, has been developing activities on medicinal plants since 1984. The two major objetives are: to collect and preserve the genetic diversity of wild Brazilian medicinal plants and to recover information about traditional medicine through ethnobotanical surveys.

The work comprise collecting and introduction of germoplasm and its multiplication and conservation. About 330 accessions of 133 species have already been included in the germplasm bank of CENARGEN, and 250 accession are maintained in regional gene banks. A list of the most important species with their access number and medicinal use is presented.
