GENETIC STUDY AND SELECTION OF SOME TRAITS IN SOLANUM LACINIATUM AIT

Author:   A. Jatisatienr
Abstract:
Starting material for breeding consisted of seven populations of different origins. Selection difference, and selection response were studied from inbred and outbred lines. General combining ability and special combining ability were estimated from diallel mating design.

The results of diallel crossing showed that general combining ability was not found in all investigated quantitative characters, where as special combining ability was found in every trait. This may be because the parents were selected three times before crossing.

However, with some interesting characters for breeding, such as % solasodine yield, yield of leaves and resistance to disease, general combining ability was found in some parents. The pairs of parents which gave the best progeny were reported.

After selection the mean values of the outbred lines seemed to be higher than those of the inbred lines, in all investigated characters.

The heritability of % solasodine yield was found to be 0.44 in F2 and 0.50 in F3. With leaf yield the heritability of F2 was 0.39 and the heritability of resistance to disease was 0.28 and 0.43 in F3 and I3 respectively.
