METHODS AND RESULTS OF BREEDING A FENNEL VARIETY (FOENICULUM VULGARE MILL.) FOR ANNUAL CULTIVATION

Authors:   I. Reichardt, F. Pank
Abstract:
The necessary lowering of the manpower expenditure on fennel growing can be achieved by sowing early-maturing varieties directly into the ground instead of planting plantlets. The breeding of such varieties started with a screening of existing strains with the aim to find lines with the following characters: early maturity, yield of 1 t/ha, large seeds, oil content of 6 ml/100 g in the seeds and fenchone content of 12 – 24 % in the oil and limited growth height. The following breeding methods were used: crossing, provoking mutations by chemicals, positive mass selection, individual selection and isolation. The variety "Berfena" resulting from breeding was produced with the following characters: early maturity (beginning of October), yield 1,2 t/ha, oil content 5,4 ml/100 g seeds, fenchone content 22 % in the oil, growth height 142 cm.
