PHYTOTRON AS A TOOL FOR SPEEDING UP SELECTION OF POPPY (PAPAVER SOMNIFERUM L.)

Author:   J. Bernáth
Abstract:
On the basis of our earlier experiences (Bernáth 1986) establishing physioecological characteristics of morphinane alkaloid accumulation a "speeding up" selection method of poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) has been developed. In model crossing experiment of 'Reading' and 'Australian' population, using PCA matematical analysis, it was proved that the "phenotypic" appearance of alkaloids in F1 and further generations must be considered very carefully. Based on this experiences, using phytotron chambers /Conviron PGB-36) and natural conditions paralelly, population of narcotine type was drawn into the investigations. As a result of well controlled selection narcotine content of capsule was increased from 6.8 %o up to 8.0 %o value. At the same time the flexibility of accumulation was reduced too. While in the original population the narcotine content varied between 1 and 11 %o, in the final stage of selection process (after 5 generations) the minimum value was 5 %o and 13 %o the maximum one.
