VARIABILITY OF CHAMAZULENE WITHIN ACHILLEA MILLEFOLIUM

Authors:   A. Bélanger, L. Dextraze
Abstract:
The essential oils isolated from twenty different plants of A. millefolium by steam distillation were analysed by GC and Kovat's Indices. The main components found in the oils were chamazulene(65–1%), germacrene D(55–5%), beta-thujone(33,6–0%), alpha-thujone(21,3–0%), alpha-phellandrene(18–0%), sabinene(17–0,3%), myrcene(14,7–0,4%), beta-pinene(9,5–0,2%), beta-carryophylene(8,5–0,6%), camphor(7,1–0,2%), 1,8-cineole(5,6–0,3%) para-cymene(4,9–0,2%), bornyl acetate(4,3–0,1%), camphene(3,2–0,1%), limonene(2,9–0,1%) and gamma-terpinene(2,8–0,2%). Significant qualitative and quantitative variations were also found in the total content of monoterpenes (1,2–57,2%) and sesquiterpenes (39,9–98,8%).

A single plant of Achillea millefolium which produced the highest content of chamazulene was propagated by rhizome for further production of oils rich in blue pigment.
