ISHS Acta Horticulturae 330: WOCMAP I - Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Conference: part 4 of 4

COMPARATIVE STUDY ON BIOLOGY, GROWTH AND PRODUCTIVITY OF DIFFERENT TAXA AND ECOTYPES OF GENUS ORIGANUM

Authors:   G. Circella, L. D'Andrea
Keywords:   yield, essential oil, flavour, day length
Abstract:
The genus Origanum includes many species and subspecies of aromatic interest. The controversial taxonomy of the genus has been recently revised with the definition of 38 species and 17 taxa of hybrid origin (letswaart, 1990). Chemotypes within the same taxon were identified (Fleisher et al., 1982). A study in order to evaluate in field the morphological, physiological and aromatic characteristics and yielding capability of different populations and taxa of the genus Origanum coming from spontaneous populations of the mediterranean area was carried out. Growth, characteristics of the inflorescences, aromatic properties, essential oil content and yield in edible product, were analysed. A spontaneous population of O. vulgare spp. hirtum, collected in Southern Italy, interesting for yield and flavour, was identified. The effect of different day lengths (8 h, 12 h, 16 h) under controlled temperature (20°C±1), air humidity (65% R.H.) and luminosity (7000 lux) conditions on a population of O. vulgare ssp. hirtum was studied. The growth rate and the flower differentation were influenced by day length.
