PALYNOLOGICAL AND CYTOLOGICAL STUDIES OF THE GENUS CINNAMOMUM

Authors:   R. Sritharan, V.J. Jacob, S. Balasubramaniam, K.V.A. Bavappa
Abstract:
Pollen morphology and chromosome numbers of the genus Cinnamomum in Sri Lanka were investigated to distinguish the species and to find the genetic variability. Cinnamomum species such as C. capparucoronde (Blume), C. citriodorum (Thwaites), C. dubium (Nees), C. litseaefolium (Thwaites), C. ovalifolium (Wight), C. rivulorum (Kostermans) and C. sinharajanse (Kostermans); (wild cinnamon species) together with the cultivated cinnamon (C. verum, Presl) were studied.

Pollen grains in each of the examined species were omni-aperturate and spheroidal in shape. They possessed similar faveolate ornamentation in the surface. Significant differences in pollen diameter and exine thickness were found among some of the species. All the species examined had the same diploid somatic chromosome number of 24. The cytological and pollen morphological data are reported for the first time.
