THE COLLECTION AND EVALUATION OF ETHIOPIAN PEPPER CULTIVARS FOR USE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF IMPROVED COMMERCIAL TYPES

Author:   T. Bezuneh
Abstract:
Both the hot and mild types of pepper (Capsicum frutescens L. and Capsicum annuum L.), which are cultivated in various regions in Ethiopia, provide a large wealth of genetic variability from which new cultivars of economic importance may be developed. A systematic collection of local pepper cultivars was made in order to serve as a basis for:
  1. The development of new cultivars with commercially desirable morphological characteristics such as pronounced colour.
  2. The selection and development of strains which are high yielding and disease resistent.
