ISHS Acta Horticulturae 329: VII International Symposium on Plant Growth Regulators in Fruit Production

THE INVOLVEMENT OF GIBBERELLINS IN CONTROLLING BUD DEVELOPMENT OF GRAPE VINES (VITIS VINIFERA L.)

Authors:   S. Lavee, M. Ziv, H. Melamud, Z. Bernstein
Abstract:
The phenomena of bud necrosis in grape vines has been studies for a period of 10 years. In cv. Queen of vineyard the bud necrosis in the form of ‘split buds’ occurs both on high vigor vines and after application of GA3. The split buds occur only in buds developing during the strong growth flush in the spring or on the vigorous growth above a GA treatment. It has been shown that the process of necrosis in the buds had the same morphological and cytological pattern on vigorous vines and on those treated with GA3. The endogenous level of GA-activity in the leaves and buds of the vigorous vines during active growth was more than double than that in the same organs on moderately growing vines. It could be concluded that the necrosis in buds of cv. Queen of vineyard occuring or induced in the field was due to an elevated supraoptimal level of GA.
