EFFECTS OF CPPU (CYTOKININ) ON KIWIFRUIT PRODUCTIVITY

Abstract:
CPPU, a diphenylurea-derivative cytokinin, was sprayed on Kiwifruit vines, at two different application times (14 and 35 days after full bloom) and concentrations (10 and 20 ppm), to test the effects of this substance on productivity, fruit quality and storage-life of kiwifruit.

CPPU increased fruit size and yield per vine at all the concentrations and application times tested, without affecting fruit seed number and fruit drop. However, the early treatments (14 days AFB) increased fruit size and also fruit dry matter content, while the qualitative characteristics and storability of fruits were similar to the control. The late treatments (35 days AFB) increased fruit size and yield by promoting only water accumulation, with negative effects on the qualitative characteristics and storability. All treatments caused a protruding distal end on about 70% of the fruits.
