ISHS Acta Horticulturae 329: VII International Symposium on Plant Growth Regulators in Fruit Production

MOVEMENT OF PACLOBUTRAZOL THROUGH APPLE AND CHERRY SHOOTS

Authors:   P.S. Blake, J.D. Quinlan
Abstract:
When paclobutrazol, dissolved in xylem sap, was passed through shoot stem segments, apple tissues retained a much greater amount of chemical, compared with cherry. Varying the rate of sap flow through the shoot segment also influenced the level of retention, more paclobutrazol being retained by shoot tissues at lower flow rates. Loss of 14C-paclobutrazol from sap as a result of passage through shoot stem tissues was greater in the case of apple and was also influenced by the rate of sap flow. It is suggested that the greater efficiency of transport of paclobutrazol through cherry shoot tissues is a factor determining the apparent greater sensitivity of this crop to the growth regulator, compared with apple.
