Abstract:
Field application of the cytochinin-like compound CPPU, [N-(2-chloro-4-pyridil-N- phenylurea)], strongly improve fruit size in both apple and kiwifruit, although typical fruit shape is sometimes deformed, particularly in the former species.
In order to establish whether this collateral effect could be attributed to the chemical movement or to sites of accumulation, 14C-CPPU uptake and distribution inside developing apples and kiwifruit were studied.
Maximum CPPU uptake was found shortly after the treatment, and to a higher degree in apple.
The recovered radioactivity in different fruit sections during a time-course experiment showed that the chemical had little movement from the site of application.
Accumulation sites were not identified in the fruits.
