ISHS Acta Horticulturae 328: International Workshop on Greenhouse Crop Models

INTER-PLANT VARIABILITY: A DAILY CRITERION FOR THE GROWER, AN OPEN QUESTION FOR THE MODELLER

Authors:   M. Navarrete, M. Sebillotte, B. Jeannequin
Abstract:
Variability between the plants in a greenhouse tomato crop is quite large. This presents difficulties both for the grower and the modeller. The grower has to face up to it at planting (for choosing the young plants), and later on because most of his work consists of cultural operations applied to one plant after the other. Therefore, the aim of the experiment is to create variability within the canopy, and then test some techniques, applied according to the vigour of each plant. Most of them (under the present conditions) do not improve significantly the overall yield of the canopy, but alter the yield build-up model. From a modelling standpoint, taking into account variability should be interesting, to study competitive relations in the crop and to integrate the growers' practices as regards variability, in decision support tools.
