ISHS Acta Horticulturae 327: II European Workshop on Thermo- and Photomorphogenesis in Plants

CONTROL OF PLANT HEIGHT IN POINSETTIA BY TEMPERATURE DROP AND GRAPHICAL TRACKING.

Abstract:
Pinched and non-pinched plants of poinsettia cvs. Lilo and Starlight were given a 2-hour temperature drop (from 19 to 13°C) or temperature increase (from 19 to 25°C) from the start of SD-treatment until flowering. A temperature drop during the last 2 hours of the night or the first 2 hours of the day reduced plant height, plant diameter and the length of leaf and bract petioles, but had only a small influence on bract size and flower development. Graphical trackings which is a procedure whereby actual plant height is plotted against expected plant height during development (from SD to the marketing stage), was used for the control of plant height of 21 poinsettia cultivars grown with a temperature drop of about 6°C. Plants of excellent quality were obtained using this method.
