ISHS Acta Horticulturae 327: II European Workshop on Thermo- and Photomorphogenesis in Plants

COOPERATIVE EUROPEAN RESEARCH ON TEMPERATURE STRATEGIES FOR BEDDING PLANTS

Authors:   J. Vogelezang, R. Moe, H. Schüssler, L. Hendriks, L. Cuijpers, E. Ueber
Abstract:
Four simultanuous experiments with bedding plants were carried out in Norway, Sweden, Germany and The Netherlands. Three temperature treatments were applied on each location, a 2-hr temperature drop before sunrise, a 2-hr drop at sunrise and a 4-hr drop in the same period. The control was carried out in Norway, Sweden and Germany, whereas a 'slow' temperature drop was carried out in The Netherlands. Plugs of Pelargonium, Petunia, Impatiens and Salvia were delivered by one company. Cultural methods were standardized as much as possible. Plant height was not or only slightly affected by all temperature strategies. This result was remarkable, because it was assumed beforehand, that short temperature drops might have the same general validity as DIF. Possible explanations are discussed.
