EFFECT OF GROWING LOCATION, HARVEST MATURITY AND VENTILATION DURING STORAGE ON RIPENING AND SUPERFICIAL SCALD OF "STARKING DELICIOUS" APPLES |

| Abstract:
"Starking Delicious" apples were harvested at 2 or 3 marurity stages from two locations, representing 500 and 700 m altitude, of the main apple growing area in Macedonia-Nort Greece and the ripening parameters (Fm, SSC) and scald incidence were measured after storage (0,5ÆC and 95% RH) in air with or without ventilation. The results showed that ripening of the fruit was advanced during storage with the same rate in all fruit samples regardless of location and harvest date and at the end of the storage period (5–6 months) the fruit considered to be soft. The early harvested apples from the two growing locations developed a high incidence of scald after 5 months storage. Fruit from high altitude (700 m) showed better storage performance with reduced scald than the fruit harvested from lower altitude (500 m). Ventilation significatly reduced the incidence of scald in the fruits of both locations. Scald score was low in the vented fruit even after a 5 day shelf life. | |
