RESISTANCE TO TULIP BREAKING VIRUS (TBV) IN TULIP

Authors:   W. Eikelboom, Joop P. van Eijk, D. Peters, Jaap M. van Tuyl
Abstract:
Infections of tulip breaking virus (TBV) in tulip can not sufficiently be controlled by rogueing infected plants, or by sprays with mineral oils or synthetic pyrethroid insecticides. To initiate breeding for virus resistance at CPRO-DLO, research is focussed on the development of test methods and search for sources of resistance.

Plants became infected after inoculation in all developmental stages by viruliferous aphids, or mechanically using sap of virus. The results after mechanical inoculation do not always correspond with those by aphid inoculation. Inoculation by Myzus persicae appeared to be the most effective method and resulted in clear differences in susceptibility between the cultivars tested. Clear differences in susceptibility are found between the cultivars when plants are inoculated around the time of flowering. However, the resistant, except 'Cantata' and 'Princeps' and susceptible cultivars gave similar results, i.e. all cultivars are susceptible when the bulbs were tested.

A high degree of resistance was found in the cultivars 'Cantata' and 'Princeps' of Tulipa fosteriana, while the level of resistance in T. fosteriana 'Madame Lefeber' and 'Juan' varied in the experiments.
