MUTATION BREEDING OF ALSTROEMERIA IN POLAND

Author:   A. Przybyla
Abstract:
For induction of mutations in Alstroemeria gamma rays (60Co) and fast neutrons (cyclotron U-120) were used in the range of 2.5 to 100 Gy. The object of the treatment were actively growing rhizomes of young plants. Mutations of frequent occurence were: change of flower colour, change of design on the flower petals. Less frequent were mutations of flower petals shape, change of flower size, mutations of growth vigour, productivity, season of bloom. In most cases they were stable. Only in a few cases sectorial chimeras were observed. No differences were observed in the spectrum of mutations induced by gamma rays or fast neutrons. The range of optimal doses of gamma rays for induction of useful mutations was 3–7 Gy. The lethal dose, in the case of gamma rays appeared to be 50 Gy.

As a result of mutation breeding new cvs were obtained: Catalina, Ines and Juanita. They have attractive colours of flowers and give high yields. One, namely Ines blooms all the year round. Also miniature mutants were isolated.
