ISHS Acta Horticulturae 325: VI International Symposium on Flower Bulbs

PROPAGATION OF HEALTHY LATVIAN-BRED LILY CULTIVARS BY MEANS OF FLOWER-BUDS

Authors:   I. Zhola, A. Ushkaura, J. Ignashs
Abstract:
Work carried out during three years (1988–1991) with Latvian-bred lilies proved that they can be succesfully propagated in vitro from flower-buds. All cultivars and groups of lilies do not multiply equally fast. Under the influence of cytokinins in the culture medium, in some cases adult plants of some cultivars developed bulbils in leaf-axils, which is not characteristic of them, as a rule. Blossoms developed normally and large scale flowering began in the 4th year. Virus-infected plants were discarded mostly in the test-tube stage, using the ELISA test. At the same time identification of viruses was carried on. Working with test plants as well as with serological and electron microscopic methods, CuMV and LSV were isolated. Two other viruses have not yet been fully identified.
