Abstract:
In Alstroemeria cultivars micropropagation ability is an important characteristic. A critical understanding of the factors that favour micropropagation could be of great value in order to develop selection criteria for this characteristic. Three species and some hybrids were cross pollinated in a diallel, embryos were rescued and plants were obtained. The genomic constitution, rhizome morphology and rhizome multiplication rate (RMR) of parental plants were studied. To make the required combinations an embryo rescue technique had to be developed. Additionally, the hybrid character was confirmed by cytological methods. It was investigated whether there was any relation between genome constitution and micropropagation ability.
