ISHS Acta Horticulturae 325: VI International Symposium on Flower Bulbs

THE EFFECT OF REMOVAL OF ROOTS AND APPLICATION OF PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS ON TULIP SHOOT GROWTH

Authors:   L. Kawa-Miszczak, E. Wegrzynowicz, M. Saniewski
Abstract:
The effects of removal of roots, in the presence of or absence of leaves, and application of plant growth regulators on tulip shoot growth were studied. The basal parts of bulbs were kept in water, GA, BA, and GA + BA. GA greatly stimulated the growth of internodes and flowering occurred. BA stimulated the growth of stem only in case where leaves were excised. Mixture of GA + BA caused intermediate effects. IAA applied in place of removed flower bud caused similar growth of stem in bulbs kept in water, GA and GA + BA. In bulbs kept in BA, the stem growth was smaller. However, the thickening of stem was higher in BA and GA + BA treated bulbs.
