THE PRODUCTION OF APELDOORN TULIPS AFTER EXPOSURE TO ETHYLENE DURING STORAGE OF THE PLANTING STOCK |

| Abstract:
Exposure of 'Apeldoorn' mother bulbs, 8–10 cm circumference, to 0.07, 0.15, 0.2 or 2 ppm ethylene promoted the decrease of fresh weight during storage. The degree of response depended on the concentration and time of application: the sooner ethylene was applied after harvest and the higher the concentration, the stronger the effect was. Longer application of ethylene than for two weeks resulted in increased weight losses. Production rates were reduced under the influence of ethylene during storage. The longer the exposure periods and the higher the concentration the stronger the response. Due to ethylene application lower numbers of top-sized bulbs were harvested and a larger weight portion of harvested bulbs was found in smaller bulbs. Plants from ethylene-treated mother bulbs showed more axillary leaves and senesced earlier when exposed to 2 ppm ethylene. | |
